Delicious Portuguese Sausage Hot Dogs with Homemade Buns

Kid-Approved Homemade Hotdogs: The Perfect On-the-Road Snack!

I often bring easy snacks or lunch to my son’s soccer games because there are sometimes no restaurants around the park. It’s convenient to prepare in advance, so whenever my son gets hungry, it’s ready, and it’s definitely more cost-effective than buying food there.

This recipe is super simple. Just stuff Portuguese sausage inside with ketchup and mustard because most kids prefer their hotdogs without lettuce, onions, or chilies. Of course, you can add those toppings if you like!

Hotdogs are undoubtedly a kid-friendly snack. Homemade bread always tastes the best:soft, fluffy, and chewy. I understand that moms are busy, and store-bought hotdog buns are cheap and save time. However, my main concern is why they are so inexpensive and why they last so long, unlike homemade buns that tend to get hard on the second or third day. This is likely due to the preservatives and additives in store-bought buns. Maybe it’s not a big deal if you eat hotdogs occasionally, but you probably want to avoid those chemicals as much as possible, right?

I never learned how to bake, but I started baking bread when my child was born because a friend introduced me to the simplicity of using a bread machine. There are still many things I don’t know about baking, but I can easily make hotdog buns. So, please allow me to share my straightforward hotdog recipe.

One of the great things about hotdog buns is that the dough is easy to shape. Some bread dough can be sticky and challenging to work with. If you make a lot of buns and freeze them, it’s convenient, and the taste and texture remain fresh.

Making hotdog buns is pretty straightforward. There are no special tricks. Just mix the ingredients in the bread machine and start the dough mode, then shape the bread and bake. It’s that simple! So, let’s make a bunch and freeze them!

Portuguese Sausage:

My husband has Portuguese heritage, so he has a strong affinity for Portuguese cuisine, particularly Portuguese sausage. My family enjoys this sausage for its unique flavor, which is seasoned with garlic, paprika, and various spices. Its texture, with a crisp outer casing and a juicy and flavorful interior, makes it especially appealing. It pairs wonderfully with homemade hotdog buns and makes for a delicious snack.

My husband discovered this Portuguese Sausage at Costco, and it’s quite a good deal.

Instructions:

  1. Mix all the ingredients in the bread machine in the specified order.

  2. After the kneading cycle is complete, remove the dough from the bread machine. Stretch it from top to bottom to release any gas and shape it into a round ball. Cover it and let it rest for 15 minutes.

  3. Divide the dough into 5 equal portions, shape each portion into a ball, cover, and let them rest for another 15 minutes.

  4. Use a rolling pin or a wooden rolling stick to flatten each ball of dough into an oval shape, about 4-5 inches wide. Once you have an oval shape, fold both ends of the dough towards the center, pinching them together to form a hotdog shape about 4-5 inches long. Once all portions are rolled into hotdog shape, cover them and let the dough ferment for about 30-45 minutes, or until it has roughly doubled in size.

  5. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 13-15 minutes or until the bread turns golden brown.

  6. While the bread is baking, cook the sausages according to your preference, either by grilling or boiling.

  7. Once the bread is baked and has cooled slightly, make a slit in each bread roll. Be careful not to cut all the way through.

  8. Fill each bread roll with a sausage, and add ketchup and mustard to taste. Enjoy!

Suggestions and Tips for Using a Bread Machine

Speaking of a ‘Bread Machine,’ I highly recommend getting one if you’re interested in home baking.
I’ve experimented with various bread machines, ranging from inexpensive options to more moderately priced ones. While I haven’t ventured into the realm of super expensive models, based on my experience, I haven’t observed significant differences when the machine is solely utilized for kneading. There might be a minor variation in noise level, but aside from that, the distinctions aren’t substantial. However, when the entire baking process is taken into account, that’s when the bread machine’s impact on baking quality becomes evident.
There are many bread machines available. If you prefer a bread maker that can handle the entire bread-making process, I highly recommend the KBS Large 17-in-1 Bread Machine, currently priced at $127.46 with a discount of -26%. This bread machine is known for making superior bread. If you only need a bread maker for kneading, I suggest the Elite Gourmet bread maker, currently priced at $64.99 with a discount of -13%.
